WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT PETE
The Netherlands is often seen as a beacon of liberalism; yet, every year people dress up in blackface provoking a great deal of dissension. The tradition of dressing up like “Black Pete” dates back to the mid 1800s, a time where slavery still persisted. Throughout the years, Black Pete has become the topic of controversy in the Netherlands, as part of the country wants to hold on to the tradition whilst others think it is an anachronistic offense and highly racist. The feast, which is intended for children, is currently undergoing massive changes, but the debates surrounding it remain unresolved.
